The screensaver on Beth's computer is an instant icebreaker for visitors to her tiny office at Harvard Medical School. “That’s an X-ray of Czar Nicholas’ wife's hand,” says Beighlie, about the image of a skeletal hand floating around on her desktop. “The X-ray machine was popular as a parlor game for the rich when it was first invented.” [more]

Jacques Louis-Jean has gone from washing dishes to running the payroll for a crew of 100 people, while playing a big role in the everyday duties involved in running a food production operation worth $1.5 million a year. He started as a young Haitian immigrant struggling to get a foothold in a new culture. Now he is a community leader, a college graduate and father of three. [more]
