Getting to Work

Harvard has a number of services, including parking permits and discounted MBTA passes, that can help you get to work and from one University location to another. Both require advance registration. If you're not sure about the best way to get to work or just want to consider alternatives to driving, Harvard also offers commuting consulting services for new employees.

Alternatives to driving

Harvard's busy downtown locations can be difficult to reach by car and parking can be expensive. All of Harvard's main campuses are well served by public transportation. If you are considering the best way to get to work, these services can help you.

In Cambridge, Commuter Choice, a program of Cambridge Transportation Services, provides information on alternative transportation options to assist faculty and staff who commute to Harvard by car. These programs are designed as an incentive for employees to use modes of transportation other than driving alone in a car and include a list of those interested in carpooling. Call 617-384-RIDE (7433) or visit their web site for more information.

In the Longwood Medical Area, where parking is very limited, Medical Academic and Scientific Community Organization, Inc. (MASCO) provides information about commuting options. Visit MASCO online or call 617-632-2800 for more information.

MBTA Pass Program

Harvard offers its employees a significant discount on monthly MBTA passes. And the process for getting one is easy. The T pass purchasing program is online: employees can buy a pass without leaving their desks, and need only sign up once to have the pass automatically mailed to them every month. And, since payment is through pre-tax payroll deduction, buyers save even more money on top of Harvard's subsidy. Purchasers must sign up online one month in advance in order to receive the next month's pass. For instance, October 1 is the last day to sign up for a November pass. Passes are mailed to the purchaser's home address. Go online to find more information or to register for the MBTA pass program.

Parking Services

Cambridge: 617-496-1792 or 617-495-4785 (recorded information).
Parking Services sells annual parking permits (September through August) for the Cambridge and Allston campuses. Parking is limited, so there may be a waiting list. New parking applications can be processed online.

Longwood Medical Area: 617-432-1111
Parking is extremely limited in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area and there is a long waiting list. Information on off-site parking with free shuttle service is available online or by calling MASCO at 617-632-2800.

Longwood Medical Area Shuttle (M2)

The Longwood Medical Area Shuttle (M2) runs regularly between the Longwood Medical Area and the Cambridge campus every day, except Sundays and University holidays. You can ride the service for free by showing your Harvard ID card. For a schedule and the full list of stops between Boston and Cambridge, visit the MASCO web site.

Harvard also has a range of other shuttle services available to ID holders. Information on these services can be found online.
